Performance Collective Showcase
At the start of 2024, Common Wealth began a new venture, employing a Performance Collective, a group of young, working-class creatives who are paid two days a week to train and create political theatre together using Common Wealth’s methodology.
To wrap the year, the collective are coming together to showcase the beginning of their individual and collaborative work:
Nabeel Bhatti: Wait Without Hope – A short film exploring the complexities of unrequited love within the dynamics of a platonic relationship. Written and Directed by Nabeel and featuring fellow collective member Sarah.
Mustafa Husseini (MusT): Ghost Guest – A story of two step brothers meeting for the first time. Written and Directed by MusT and featuring fellow collective member JoJo.
Samara Daniels: Redrum Melody – A developing piece based on the themes of Honour Killings in the UK. The diasporic difficulties of navigating life in Britain.
Yasmin GB : Take a seat – a visual installation performance exploring, identity, everyday objects family, friends and politics.
Sarah Derrick: Fleabag – a comedic monologue from the hit one woman production and TV series, written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
JoJo KeKe: Identity – The journey in search and rediscovery of true Identity amidst various challenging and conflicting circumstances and experiences.
Kenzie Jayne: Kreating Steppers – Combining musical and choreographic skills, Kreating Steppers is a showcase of an upcoming musician on her path to setting up dance sessions. This will be a performative piece with an opportunity to get involved.
Mahshid Alavi: In/jaa – an installation followed by a live performance. Reflecting the experience of living across two worlds – one in Iran, the other “here.” One where her body resides; the other held through screens, memories, and objects, tracing the lines between presence, absence, belonging and distance.
Noor Afasa: Home and Hope – Poetry readings from Noors second publication, an anthology exploring the importance of culture and the meaning of religion.
