There is an Alternative is an interdisciplinary art exhibition with 9 artworks exploring new ways of thinking and organising around issues of our time; social care, the climate crisis, pregnancy, the immigration system, medication, queer culture, fast fashion, youth violence and invisible labour.
This exhibition is about the here and now, it is also about our future and the world we want to build – and pass on.
Artforms include installation, video, audio, photography, illustration, printmaking and textiles. Art can be a tool for change, allowing us to access new perspectives and possibilities.
‘There is No Alternative’ was a phrase used by Maggie Thatcher in the 80’s, it diminished hope & possibility. It feels ever pressing to be talking about alternatives, building up solidarity & using art to help us imagine things differently.
Exhibition dates
The exhibition will open from Tuesday 20th July – Saturday 21st August from 12-5pm each day at Common Space in Bradford City Centre, 1-3 John Street, BD1 3JT
Access
Please let us know if you have any access requirements. Touch tours and audio descriptions are available. The exhibition is on the ground floor and is wheelchair accessible at ground level. Disabled toilets are upstairs and unfortunately – although the lift is working – it does not meet modern wheelchair size requirements. Fast Fashion isn't Cheap: Mending Workshop
Tuesday 17th August 2021, 2-4 pm
As part of “There is an Alternative” we will be presenting a workshop to teach anyone how to mend their own clothes. All materials will be provided and no prior sewing experience is necessary. Participants will also receive a free sewing kit to take home, so they can apply their new skills to save their well loved clothes from landfill.
The workshop will be run according to government guidelines, in a socially distance format, each participant will create their own piece which they are able to take home with them.
The workshop will take place at the Common Space on Tuesday 17th August at 2pm. It will last 2 hours. There are only 10 places available so we will be working on a first come first serve basis, so please book in advance by emailing: [email protected].
FAQ's
Can I bring children / family to the exhibition? Yes. The exhibition is open to all. We will have paper and pens available for children to draw. Please note all children must be supervised and not touch any of the artwork.
What procedures do you have in space regarding Covid-19? In the space we will have no more than 30 people at once, sanitisation stations and masks are available on the welcome desk. We advise for people to wear their masks and maintain social distancing where possible however under the updated guidelines from the government this is at the discretion of each individual/group. Please respect other members of the public who may have different approaches to Covid-19 than yourself.
If you have ANY coronavirus symptoms, please DO NOT attend. Symptoms include:

- Difficulty breathing
- Headache
- Myalgia (Muscle aches)
- Potential loss of smell
- Conjunctivitis
- Fatigue

How do I book? There is no booking process, the exhibition is walk in.
Do I pay or is it free? The exhibition is is free for all. We would gratefully appreciate any donations which would contribute to future running of Common Space and facilities are available at the space for card or cash donations if you wish to do so.
Do you have refreshments in your space? There is no eating or drinking allowed at the exhibition and no refreshments available.
Are there any toilets available? Toilets, including accessible toilet can be found in Oastler Market (within the same complex). Please ask our staff for directions if you are not familiar with the area.
How long do you recommend is the suitable time to explore the exhibition? We suggest up to 1 hour as there are different elements involved such as audio that you may want to listen to during your visit.
Do I need to bring anything with me for the full experience? We advise you bring headphones along with your phone which has access to the internet. There are three different exhibits which have links to the full audio via a QR code. Full details on signage at the exhibition.
Is there any space for bags/coats to be stored during my visit? We do not have a cloakroom and will ask you to keep your possessions with you.
